Dear Friends,
I am not making this up—this week the British journal Time and Mind published an essay by Benny Shanon of Jerusalem’s Hebrew University claiming that the Exodus can be explained by mind altering drugs. The psychology professor suggests that the Israelites were likely high on a hallucinogenic drug when Moses was supposed to have come down the Mountain with the 10 commandments.
His theory is based on the fact that the hallucinogenic brew ayahuasca from the Amazon contains the same psychoactive molecules that are found in several plants in the Sinai desert. So the thunder and lightening on the top of the Mountain can be explained by the people of Israel being in an “altered state of awareness.”
These kinds of stories often pop up on slow news days and are a wonderful opportunity for conversation at the water cooler for Christians who are alert. For example, we are told that over 600,000 people left Egypt (Exodus 12:37) which would require a mind altering large quantity of ayahuasca to bring on the same hallucination for the whole people of Israel. More than that, it is very hard to explain the angel of death and the passover, or the crossing of the Red Sea, or the beauty and wisdom of the 10 commandments through hallucinogenic drugs.
Shanon admits he is more familiar with ayahuasca than with the bible, having “partaken of the . . . brew about 160 times in various locales and contexts.”
The Apostle Peter says:
in your hearts reverence Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence
News stories like this provide an excellent opportunity to ‘make a defense’ for the gospel. And in the end, knowing the God of Exodus, the God of glory and grace is better than all the hallucinogenic drugs in all the world have to offer.
David Short.
The task I'm trying to achieve is above all to make you see.

Movies have become one of our more popular art forms, and these evenings are designed to challenge us beyond merely watching them into something of what Griffith was after. We plan to enjoy each work for its unique merits as we engage them for new recognitions of the nature of God, our world, and ourselves. The evenings will involve a public screening with refreshments, a brief commentary on the filmmaker’s themes, and opportunities for question and discussion. Join us! All movies are shown at 7:30 pm. Pick up blue invitations at the door to use to invite your friends.
