Dear Friends,

It has been a huge privilege to be in Vancouver and part of St. John’s for the past four weeks. I have loved every minute of my time in your city and being involved in the life of your church.

Your city is one of spectacular beauty. Every time I see the mountains I stop and wonder at the handiwork of our Lord God and have been reminded that “the heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” (Psalm 19:1).

Your church is an amazing testimony to the grace of God and to your willingness to conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel; to stand firm in one spirit and contend as one for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. (See Paul’s exhortation to the Philippians in 1:27-28.) We in Sydney (Australia) praise God for you and will continue to uphold you.

I want to urge you to:

  1. Cherish your staff team. They are amazingly gifted and completely dedicated to serving Jesus as they serve St. John’s. Some are (understandably) a little tired right now. I encourage you to see that they get a proper break over the summer. That may mean some of you stepping up and helping out where you can.
  2. Press on in faithfulness to the gospel and the Scriptures, no matter the cost. At the end of the great resurrection chapter of 1 Corinthians 15, the great application flowing from the argument that Jesus really did rise from death is ‘stand firm’. Why? Because if Jesus didn’t rise – then forget everything. All is a nonsense. But if He did (and He did!), then nothing must move us. So I say in the words of Paul: “Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain.”

In fellowship,
Mark Calder
Mark is a minister in Sydney and has been here on sabbatical for the last 4 weeks.
