Dear Friends,

Welcome to St. John’s. It’s a great pleasure to welcome Ven. Charlie Masters, National Director of the Anglican Network in Canada, as our preacher today. The “Ven.” before “Charlie” is there because Charlie has been appointed archdeacon for the Network as recognition of his seniority and close working relationship with Bishop Donald Harvey. “Venerable” can mean ‘impressive’ or ‘extremely old or obsolete’ — although we do not venerate anyone but Christ, we honour Charlie as a friend and faithful leader and servant of the gospel.

GAFCON

The Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) wound up last Sunday in Jerusalem to great joy and celebration. I hope you all read a copy of the final statement, including the creation of a Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans, the creation of a new Primates’ Council, and the Jerusalem Declaration (you can access the GAFCON website or there are printed copies at the back). The conference was the most remarkable one I have ever had the privilege of attending, and the outcome of the conference is very significant for orthodox Anglicans everywhere and particularly for all of us at St. John’s.

GAFCON is quite literally a new beginning because it offers a way forward for all who wish to promote and preserve the power of the gospel in the Anglican communion. Six representatives from St. John’s went to GAFCON and we would like to give you a brief initial reflection on the conference today at 11:30am after the 10:00am service. We want to share the experience with you, and indicate something of how GAFCON will shape our lives as Christians and Anglicans for the next decade in Vancouver. In addition we also wish to dedicate Wednesday evening July 23rd to a fuller explanation of the conference, to which you are all invited.

Parish Announcements

Parish Prayer. Please join us the Tuesday evening in the Trendell Lounge at 7:15 for coffee and 7:30 for prayer to pray for St. John’s people and ministries and ministries beyond our parish.

Birth Announcement. DEO GRATIAS : Prunella Barlow, of St. John’s Shaughnessy Seniors, is delighted to announce that Annabel and David Hazlett were blessed by the safe arrival, on 1st July 2008, of their daughter, CARYS. A sister for Brennan.

Birth Announcement. It’s a boy! You will remember that during February and March, I was collecting baby items for a young family who, due to medical circumstances, needed our help for a baby due in June. This message arrived on June 30th: “Our new addition arrived Wednesday June 18th, and he is more than we could have ever expected. We named him General Ethan Bond McConnell and he is a delightful baby. We could not be more pleased”. It is signed Nicole, Eric, Jacob (big brother) and Ethan. I add my sincere thank you to all who so generously donated to this very worthy cause.
From Edie.

Marriage Announcement. Congratulations to Nicky Schultz and Shaun Ross who are getting married here on July 12th. Please keep this couple in your prayers.

Condolences. Please keep Edith Martin in your prayers. Her twin brother died this past week in Eastern Canada.

July 15th at 7:30 pm: How do we speak to friends and family about the position we’ve taken regarding same-sex blessings? This is one of the questions that Dr. Robert Gagnon will address on Tuesday night in the Trendell Lounge when he speaks to us regarding society, sex and Holy Scripture and how we live and witness in our world today. Robert Gagnon is a New Testament scholar specializing in Pauline literature and Biblical ethics. We will have an informal time of questions and answers. Many of us at St. John’s have heard Robert and have found him a very engaging and winsome speaker. If you want answers to the very practical problems of living out your faith in our sexually charged society, this is an evening for you! Check out his web site at: http://www.robgagnon.net/

July 23rd 7:00 pm: Gafcon – The Stories with Pictures! Come to the Trendell Lounge to hear amazing stories from our reps who attended the Global Anglican Future Conference in Jerusalem.

Changes at St. John's

In the last 8 years there has been tremendous ministry growth at St. John’s and to support this growth a broader support structure is required. We have recently created the two full time positions of Ministry Support Coordinator (MSC). As a result, we no longer require a part-time administrative assistant.

We want to thank Diane Faurschou-Wong for her work as the part-time administrative assistant over the last seven years. There have been many changes in St. John’s office and Diane has taken them in her stride and continued to serve staff, volunteers, parishioners, and visitors. St. John’s and all of us on staff will miss her. Please pray for Diane during this period of personal transition and please keep the staff in your prayers as we seek to transition into a different model of ministry support.

Summer and Fall

Summer Reading. Some years ago a godly clergyman urged his flock to read biographies of notable Christians, including missionaries, without regard to where or when they lived. We too can learn much and enrich our lives by these readings. In our library is a collection of biographies and you are encouraged to spend some of your summer time with these saints of past and present. You will be fascinated, amazed and blessed.

Divorce Care August 25 – Oct 6. This is a seminar/support group for people who are either going through divorce, or who are already divorced. This year we will be offering Divorce Care on a twice-weekly basis for 7½ weeks – Monday and Thursday evenings each week. Cost of the course materials is $20.00, and pre-registration is strongly advised. If you, or anyone you know, would benefit from this very helpful program, please email Edie Rittinger or call 604-731-4966 ext 24.
