Dear Friends,

The elite performances of Olympic athletes and their stories of overcoming personal tragedy or crippling injuries are both inspiring and intimidating. Few at St. John’s have or will compete at an international level in sports, however, as we are learning this August the race is still relevant for us as Christians. The comfort in the Christian race is just how different it is than those seen in the Olympics. Our reliance on starting, running, completing, and getting the prize of the race is based on God’s promises, love, and faithfulness and not on our training, coaching, and natural abilities. Whew!!

As we enjoy our lazy August summer days, it is a great opportunity to spend time in prayer about our race:

• Reflecting on and giving thanks for God’s goodness to us individually and as a church over the past year.
• Committing the future to Him and asking for continued guidance and protection to walk in faith.
• For each other to be encouraged and growing in the race.

It is a wonderful thing to be in the race together!

From lane 6 (the slow lane),
