Dear Friends,
By the beginning of the second century AD the early Christians had abandoned Sabbath observance, along with much of the Jewish law. They chose to meet on Sunday in recognition that this was the day of resurrection. Writing around 150 AD Justin Martyr (who was indeed martyred in 165) indicates the widespread practice of Christians in the Roman Empire: On the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together in one place, and the memoirs of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read.... Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly, because it is the first day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness and matter, made the world; and Jesus Christ our Saviour on the same day rose from the dead. [First Apology, 67] In Acts 20:7 Luke and Paul gathered with the disciples in Troas and “broke bread” together on “the first day of the week.” This may have been an early Sunday church service. In Revelation 1:10 the Apostle In other words, our lives are situated around the weekly celebration of the raising of Jesus from the dead. Each week we gather to remember that death, darkness and sin do not have the final word, that Christ has been raised to the highest place to be crowned with glory and honour, and that “according to his promise we wait for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” Each week we have the great relief of ceasing from trying to justify ourselves and seeing in Jesus Christ our wisdom, our righteousness our sanctification. David. |
