Keeping Company With God

“Keeping Company with God” is a one hour service of prayer, music, a short reflection on a Bible passage and
times of silence. The service is held every second and fourth Monday of the month, at 7:30 pm in the sanctuary.

Each evening is centered on a theme from the Scripture passage, usually taken from the Psalms. Some of these
have been “The Unfailing Love of God”, “Hope in the Lord” and “Strengthened in the Lord”.

Who is this service for?
• anyone, men as well as women
• not just members of St. John’s but anyone else who would like to attend
• those who have had a busy day and want a quiet time with God
• any who are feeling burdened
• those who want to lay hold of God’s promises
• any who want to pray for loved ones or the church family
• any who want to slip in and out of a service of prayer without talking to anyone
• as well as any who want individual prayer.

There is a period of 15 minutes in the middle of the service when you can listen quietly to music, pray on your own or go to two or three prayer stations where you can pray with a member of the St. John’s prayer team.

The next service will be Monday Apr 27.

VancouverVoices and the Glories of Bach:

Saturday Apr 25, 8:00 pm at Shaughnessy Heights United Church, VancouverVoices and orchestra (trumpets! tympani!) will be performing what is perhaps Bach’s greatest choral work, the Mass in B minor. Peter Butterfield will conduct; tickets ($20/$25) are available through TicketsTonight.ca or at the door. It will be a splendid and moving event, and we know you’ll be glad you came!

  Dear Friends,

We have had a wonderful Easter this year - rejoicing in the power and grace of God in raising Jesus Christ bodily from the grave. It is the beginning of the new creation and opens the door of life for all who turn to Christ. And it is one reason why we have our key gatherings on Sundays. Jesus was crucified on Friday, lay dead in the tomb on Saturday, but was raised to life on Sunday.

By the beginning of the second century AD the early Christians had abandoned Sabbath observance, along with much of the Jewish law. They chose to meet on Sunday in recognition that this was the day of resurrection. Writing around 150 AD Justin Martyr (who was indeed martyred in 165) indicates the widespread practice of Christians in the Roman Empire:

On the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together in one place, and the memoirs of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read.... Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly, because it is the first day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness and matter, made the world; and Jesus Christ our Saviour on the same day rose from the dead. [First Apology, 67]

In Acts 20:7 Luke and Paul gathered with the disciples in Troas and “broke bread” together on “the first day of the week.” This may have been an early Sunday church service. In Revelation 1:10 the Apostle
John refers to “the Lord’s day.”

In other words, our lives are situated around the weekly celebration of the raising of Jesus from the dead. Each week we gather to remember that death, darkness and sin do not have the final word, that Christ has been raised to the highest place to be crowned with glory and honour, and that “according to his promise we wait for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” Each week we have the great relief of ceasing from trying to justify ourselves and seeing in Jesus Christ our wisdom, our righteousness our sanctification.

David.
