Parish Family News

Condolences. Our deepest condolences go to the family of Ron Baldwin, who passed away on Thursday evening, August the 20th, in Vancouver General Hospital.  Ron was a veteran of World War II – a member of the Royal Canadian Navy. His role was to serve on the ships which transported our troops across the dangerous North Atlantic to serve in the war zones in Europe.  A modest man, he seldom spoke of those days, but we know it was a time of grave danger every day at sea. He and Rita were married 63 years – a Godly example of devotion to one another.  Please keep Ron’s family – his wife Rita, and their children Norman, Leslie, and Barbara and their families in your prayers during this very difficult time. The Memorial service for Ron will be arranged for early September, and details will be available at a later date.

Condolences. Our deepest condolences to the family of Ben Buan who died peacefully in Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria Sunday, August 2nd. Ben and his wife Nancy were long-time members of St. John’s prior to their retirement and moved to Mill Bay, where they built their dream home together. Ben was Rector’s Warden for three terms, and both he and Nancy gladly served the Lord and this congregation over three decades. His memorial service will be held here on Tuesday, Aug 25 at 3 pm. Please hold Nancy, and their sons Caley and Aiden in your prayers as they mourn the loss of a deeply loved husband and father.

Wedding. Congratulations to Stephen Plitt and Monica Gregory who were married here yesterday, Saturday, Aug 22nd. Please keep this couple in your prayers as they start their life together.

Flowers. The flowers on the Credence table are given from the garden of Peter Krueger with thanksgiving to God: Psalm 103:1,2. “Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”

Community News

One Week Housing Needed. Regent College is looking for friendly Vancouverites to provide up to one week of free housing for incoming students while they search for permanent housing in August. Meals are not expected (but welcome nonetheless!). This is also a great solution for people going out of town and in need of a house-sitter. “Press forward. Do not stop, do not linger in your journey, but strive for the mark set before you.”
George Whitefield

In 1736, General James Oglethorpe, appointed by King George II to establish the first English Colony in North America, assigned Rev. John Wesley to serve as the third rector of Christ Church Savannah, Georgia.  It is said that John Wesley started the first Sunday School in North America at Christ Church Savannah.  After Rev. John Wesley returned to England, Rev. George Whitefield took responsibility for the parish and established a remarkable preaching and serving ministry that Christ Church Savannah has continued to this day.

So what is new in the story of Christ Church Savannah?  They, like us, are waiting to hear from the public courts on who their buildings are held in trust for.  They, like us, need the prayers and support of other churches.  They, like us, will continue to worship God, minister to each other and the city around them, and tell people of the exciting freedom Christ brings, regardless of which buildings they are in. They, like us, have been reminded that we rely on God, and God only, for our daily bread.

We need to be praying for the parish of Christ Church Savannah, their rector Rev. Marcus Robertson, and for Savannah.  Waiting is hard, particularly when you don’t know when you are going to get an answer.  They, like us, need prayers to keep us looking to God, and strength to follow his lead so that the people of Savannah and Vancouver might hear the freeing news of  Christ.
