Parish Family Meeting - October 1, 7:30 pm

This Thursday, October 1, we will be having a Parish Family Meeting in preparation for the judgement, to hear about plans, and to spend time in prayer. The meeting will be at 7:30 pm in the Gym.

Keeping Company with God-Monday, September 28 at 7:30 pm in the Sanctuary

Whatever your need; a quiet time with God at the end of your day, a place to receive prayer support for personal concerns or a desire to hold up this congregation in prayer – this is a place of “prayer care.” This service is held every second and fourth Monday of the month.
From one member of the congregation who attends this service -“I find it very helpful for me personally to set aside time to come before God, with Christian brothers and sisters, in a place where there is candlelight and quiet music. “Keeping Company with God” is a service of meditating on His Word and prayer. It is a time when I can pour out my heart to God and also listen to him.”

Senior’s Tea

St. John’s Seniors are all invited to our Thanksgiving Communion and Lunch this Tuesday, September 29. Communion will be in the chapel at 11 am with lunch to follow in the Trendell Lounge. We are delighted to have Marion Pocock speak to us on her life experiences. Do come and bring a friend for fun and fellowship. Please RSVP the church office at 604.731.4966 ext 0.

Connections: Hospitality Ministry

Do you want to get to know other people at church? Are you finding it challenging to connect with new people at St. John’s? Connections is a way to get to know new people or connect with old friends by sharing a light lunch with 6 or 8 others in a host-family’s home. You will meet with them after the Sunday services on October 25 and November 22. How do you get involved? We will have a registration table today, and next Sunday, after the 9 am service in the Trendell Lounge and after the 11 am in the Narthex. For more information call Jan at the church office (ext 28) or email Jan(at)sjvan(dot)org.

Small group Bible studies

We have a number of small group Bible studies that meet in Vancouver, around the lower mainland and at the church. It is a great encouragement to be involved with others in the congregation throughout the week, to study the word of God and pray together. If you are not presently in a small group and would like to be, or would like more information, please contact Jan Hobbis at the church office at 604.731.4966 ext 28 or Jan(at)sjvan(dot)org.

Parish Family News

Condolences
Please keep Bronwyn and David, Ben and Josh Short, Bronwyn’s father, Colin Harmer, and her brothers, Dave and Phil and their families in your prayers. Bronwyn’s beloved mother, Margaret, died suddenly on September 26 in Australia and a service was held for her in Wolongong this past Friday, October 2. Margaret and Colin have visited Vancouver and St. John’s on a number of occasions and have been supporters of our ministry here. Margaret was a loving, kind, and practical woman and will be missed not only by her family, but also by her many friends. She trusted in the risen Christ for her life and for her death.

Condolences
Please keep Susan and Alan, Michael, Steven, and Brian Hobkirk, as well as Susan’s siblings David, Laura, and Nancy Shandip and their families in your prayers. Susan’s beloved father died recently in Edmonton, full of faith and trusting in his Saviour. He was a remarkable man who left his mark on his community. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. A memorial service will be held sometime in October in Edmonton.

  Dear fellow parishioners and guests,

Welcome to St. John’s. If you are with us at the 9 am or 11 am service you will be able to enjoy Bach’s Cantata BWV 80 based on Luther’s famous hymn “A mighty fortress is our God.” There is a great hope and comfort in this truth that Luther writes about and King David clearly articulates in Psalm 46. It is a truth that is alive today in the resurrected Jesus Christ. If you are visiting and would be interested in finding out more or exploring this ‘truth’ further, there is an opportunity through a course called ‘Discovering Christ’. It is a course for the curious and starts October 7. It will run for 7 weeks on Wednesday’s at 7 pm including a meal.

If you are a member of St John’s you are invited to a family gathering Thursday October 1 at 7:30 pm in the hall. We are awaiting a judgment from the courts with regard to our properties, and we want to gather to share with one another, to hear some plans, and to pray together.

Over the next month, the youth ministry will be transitioning with the departure of Ken and Julie Moser. Ken and Julie’s last day with us at St. John’s will be October 18. Ken and Julie have laboured amongst us for five years now, building and nourishing a strong and Godly youth ministry. God’s gifts abound in them in this area, their vision of youth ministry is one we share, and we have been deeply grateful for their work and its fruits. This was a decision reached very carefully, prayerfully and not in haste. Though the date is their choice, the overall decision has been our Rector’s, with the knowledge and full support of St. John’s Trustees and leadership. We are thankful for Ken and Julie’s support as we make the transition to new youth ministry leadership, initially under Rev. Jim Salladin, relying on the support of the fine young Christian men and women that Ken and Julie have raised up. Ben Short and Ben van der Heide will both be taking on leadership roles within the ministry. Pray for Ken and Julie, that the good Lord will keep them in His loving hands, continuing to use them well to build His kingdom, and pray for our young people, many of whom have a deep love for Ken and Julie, two people who have lovingly led them to Jesus. On Sunday, October 18, we will send them off at an ‘All In’ from 4-6pm.

Warmly,

David Avren,

Rector’s Warden
