Parish Prayer

Please come us Mon, Jun 7 from 7:30 - 8:30 and join with others to pray for God’s guidance in this crucial time in the life of our parish. We will sing hymns, have a short homily, and pray in smaller groups.

Confirmation

A Service of Confirmation and Re-affirmation will take place on Sunday, June 20 at 3:00 pm in the main sanctuary of Broadmoor Baptist Church (St. John’s Richmond uses the smaller sanctuary), 8140 Saunders Road, Richmond – one block north of Williams and one block east of No. 3 Road. Please make a note of this and plan to attend to encourage and support our fellow parishioners in this step of commitment to Christ that they are taking.

Confirmation - Help is needed

As you have read above, the Confirmation service will be held at Broadmoor Baptist Church on June 20th. We need 2 men with vans to move articles from St. John’s to Broadmoor and back again 6 strong men to move the communion table (it’s ¾ the size of St. John’s communion table and very heavy) from the sanctuary of St. John’s Richmond to the sanctuary of Broadmoor Baptist (both are on the same site) before the service and back again after. If you can help, please contact Ruth Matheson by email or phone at 604.731.4966 ext 12 or Edie Rittinger, ext 24.

Christianity Explored

The Christianity Explored course currently meets on Thu nights at 7:00 pm in the Church Hall for a wonderful home cooked meal, short presentation and discussion. The course runs for 7 weeks and is designed for those who are curious about Christianity or are new to the Christian faith. Christianity Explored provides a warm, pressure-free environment to explore questions of faith and life. It’s informal, fun and you can choose to be silent or say whatever you want. No question is too hostile or basic and no knowledge of faith is expected!

If you have any questions or wish to register contact Aaron by email or phone at 604.731.4966 ext 22. The course is free, but a small donation is asked to help cover the cost of the awesome food.

Dear Friends,

Today we begin a sermon series on the book of Psalms, in which we will be looking at eight different types of Psalms that open up various aspects of prayer to us. In the Anglican tradition, the daily personal reading of Psalms is fundamental to the Christian life. It is the Bible’s prayer book and that is why the Book of Common Prayer has a list of Psalms to read every day so that you can go through the Book of Psalms each month. The Psalms shape our prayers as we pray through them and make them our own. I invite you to look at this sermon series as an interactive workshop--you will find some practical suggestions in each Sunday’s bulletin that you might use to interact with the sermon and with the Psalm. You will be greatly blessed if, after you hear each sermon, you read that Psalm every day in the following week and use it to help you in your own prayers. This is the way we can exercise our spiritual muscles that so very easily become flabby when they are not used. The wonderful thing about this exercise is that through it we enjoy God and know him better.

As you come to God in prayer please also continue to remember David Short. He and I have been planning for the fall and have decided that we will go through the Epistle to the Romans in the preaching and many of the Bible studies at St. John’s. David has been doing a great deal of reading and study on Romans and is hoping to be back at St. John’s preaching in the fall. He has steadily been getting stronger and during the summer he will be meeting with the leadership of St. John’s to talk through how his ministry at St. John’s will change and what a graduated return in the fall will look like. I know that David values your prayers and is very thankful for all of your love and concern. We can be deeply grateful for the grace of our Lord Jesus working in David’s life through your prayers as he has been away from ministry at St. John’s.

May God the Holy Spirit motivate and encourage you as you pray through the Psalms in the next eight weeks.

Yours in Christ Jesus,

Dan Gifford
