If you can help, please contact Ruth Matheson by email or phone at 604.731.4966 ext 12 or Edie Rittinger, ext 24.

Christianity Explored

The Christianity Explored course currently meets on Thu nights at 7:00 pm in the Church Hall for a wonderful home cooked meal, short presentation and discussion. The course runs for 7 weeks and is designed for those who are curious about Christianity or are new to the Christian faith. Christianity Explored provides a warm, pressure-free environment to explore questions of faith and life. It’s informal, fun and you can choose to be silent or say whatever you want. No question is too hostile or basic and no knowledge of faith is expected!

If you have any questions or wish to register contact Aaron by email or phone at 604.731.4966 ext 22. The course is free, but a small donation is asked to help cover the cost of the awesome food.

Support for Men

Do you struggle with pornography or related issues? Have you tried to overcome this and asked God to help you, but, to your dismay, you keep falling back into it? You don’t need to struggle alone. Two men who have been there are willing to hear your story and walk with you towards hope and freedom. You can contact us by emailing supportformen@sjvan.org. All inquiries will be treated with utmost confidentiality.

Prayer time for the Youth Group

Every Sunday in June, between the services, parents, and others with a heart to pray for the youth of this parish, are meeting in room 200 between services (around 10:30 to 10:55) to pray for the youth and youth ministry.  Feel free to join us.

Daily Bible Reading – Nourishment for our souls

Today in your bulletin, you will find a copy of the Bible Reading Guide for the next 9 weeks, June 13 to August 14.
This guide is an abbreviated version of the Book of Common Prayer Table of Lessons (pp xvi to xlv), which was written with the assumption that a person would pray and read two passages from the Bible morning and evening, as well as 6 or 8 Psalms daily. We choose one of those four readings and one Psalm for this little Guide. If you don’t have a Prayer Book, Norah Johnston (604.224.8986) would be glad to provide you with one at cost. There are two readings – one from the Old Testament and the other from the book of Psalms.
May God bless you as you read His Word.

Parish Family News

Condolences
Please keep Virginia Fankian in your prayers. Her father died quite suddenly on May 23 and he was buried in California this past Monday, June 7. Pray that God will comfort Virginia and her extended family.

Welcome Back David Little
In late August, we will welcome back David Little as he takes up the position of Youth Ministry Director. David left St. John’s three and half years ago to take up the Youth Ministry at All Saints Anglican Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. David not only started the Youth Ministry there from a small seed but he also pastured and led it through a time of great change when All Saints joined the Anglican Church in North America and moved church buildings. It will be great to welcome him back.

Good-bye…but not really
At the end of June, Anne Munro, our faithful accountant, will be moving on in her professional capacity, but will remain an active member of St. John’s. Anne has an opportunity to use her skills and experience to serve something very close to her heart; she is leaving us to help her husband in his business. Anne has served St. John’s for over eight years and, from an accounting point of view with the amount of change and growth, it has not been a simple time. She has done a remarkable job at keeping us clean and she will be missed in the office.

Concert at St. John’s on Fri, Jun 18
Come join Vancouver’s Baranduin Ensemble as it takes to the stage once again! This time around we’ll be exploring Bach’s oeuvre in greater detail than ever before, from small-scale repertoire to large. In “Bach: Sonatas and Cantatas”, we’ll bring you to a new awareness of the great composer’s human touch: from the intense musical intimacy of the Sonata for Oboe and Harpsichord (BWV 1030b), to the deep emotion that characterizes the cantata “Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut” (BWV 199), to the light-hearted parody of complex familial negotiations that underpins the famous Coffee Cantata (BWV 211). Bach’s work runs the gamut of human experience.
Featuring sopranos Jane Long and Michelle Koebke, with Sarah Tippett on violoncello and David Poon on harpsichord/organ.
Fri, Jun 18, 2010 @ 8:00 pm, St. John’s Shaughnessy Anglican Church, $15 adults/$10 students and seniors.

Family life

In family life there are marked events in which we celebrate: births, birthdays, graduations, weddings, promotions, retirements, etc. It is often in these celebratory events that we meet new people and share our family with others. Our church family is no different; between this Sunday and next, we have a two events to celebrate and thank God for.

Today, we celebrate the baptism of six people as the outward sign of an inward reality. They are publicly professing and affirming their trust in God’s promises for salvation. It is in the death and resurrection of Jesus that we find our salvation. The wonderful thing about God’s promises is that they are true and real no matter how old you are. We rejoice with these new members of our Church family! For those of you visiting today, thank you for coming and celebrating with us.

Next Sunday, we will be celebrating confirmation for the first time in close to a decade. Our St. John’s family members who are being confirmed will publicly acknowledge their baptism vows and commit to serving God and his Church. They have started their life-long commitment to discipleship with an 18-week course (some have completed 30 weeks) on what they believe, how that impacts their behaviour, and what it means to belong to the Church. Come next Sunday to the Confirmation Service and rejoice in the growth “in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” of some of our family members. June 20, 3 pm at Broadmoor Baptist Church (8140 Saunders Road in Richmond).

Our family life together is a reality of God’s grace and doing and here are two great reasons to celebrate it and share it with others.

In Christ,
Joanne Lawrie
