Prayer Chain

We have a small group of people in our congregation who are committed to praying for parishioners and their friends who are in a crisis, i.e. loss of work, accidental injury, death in the family, or illness.  If you would like prayer for yourself or for someone else, please contact Ruth Matheson in the church office, ext 12, and she will ask the prayer chain to pray for you.

2011 Giving Envelopes

If you gave to the ministries of St. John’s more than once in 2010 you almost certainly have a giving code, and your own box of 2011 giving envelopes.

Please pick up your envelopes from tables just outside the gymnasium in the church hall.

Using your giving envelopes greatly assists the office staff in accurately recording and keeping track of your financial gifts. It also helps us provide you with comprehensive giving reports, and simplifies the issuing of tax receipts at the end of the year.

When using these envelopes please make your cheques payable to St. John’s Vancouver.

If you don’t have a giving code, or giving envelopes, and would like some, please contact Krista at the church office 604.731.4966 ext. 19 or Krista(at)sjvan(dot)org and she would be happy to help you and answer any questions about this.

It’s a boy!

The baby has come… he is here… the GOD-MAN has arrived… or as the Message version of the Bible puts it in John 1 “The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighbourhood.” This is the incarnation. It is unparalleled. It had never happened before. It has never happened since. It will never happen again. It is the central event of human history. God did not simply reveal Himself; He wrapped Himself in humanity forever and ever.

Augustine of Hippo, expressed it like this:“The Maker of man became man that He, Ruler of the stars, might be nourished at the breast; that He, the Bread, might be hungry; that He, the Fountain, might thirst; that He, the Light, might sleep; that He, the Way, might be wearied by the journey; that He, the Truth, might be accused by false witnesses; that He, the Judge of the living and the dead, might be brought to trial by a mortal judge; that He, Justice, might be condemned by the unjust; that He, Discipline, might be scourged with whips; that He, the Foundation, might be suspended upon a cross; that Courage might be weakened; that Security might be wounded; that Life might die. To endure these and similar indignities for us, to free us, unworthy creatures, He who existed as the Son of God before all ages, without a beginning, deigned to become the Son of Man in these recent years. He did this although He who submitted to such great evils for our sake had done no evil and although we, who were the recipients of so much good at His hands, had done nothing to merit these benefits.”

In the fog of post-Christmas busyness, I pray you will reflect on the wonder of the incarnation, express your gratitude and delight (to God and to others), show real kindness to others, and take every opportunity to explain the miracle of God becoming flesh. He is ‘Emmanuel – God with us’.
