New LordWe're not saved by what Jesus teaches. We're saved by Jesus. AND He continues to teach us now. The first eight verses expand We're not saved by what Jesus teaches. We're saved by Jesus. AND He continues to teach us now. The first eight verses spell out the truth about the great restoration. Restoration is the Bible word for what God will do when the world ends. The story of the Old Testament is God promising how He is giong to bring about the restoration. Acts 1:8 is much more about Jesus than us. It is not a motivational speech. Jesus is taking the Word of God from Isaiah and saying: "World, I am reopening the trial". Jesus, being the first to be raised from the dead starts the restoration. This sermon explains two important points about the resurrection... back Canon David Short - Sep 13, 2009 |

New PresenceThe whole book of Acts is working out the implications of the resurrection of Jesus, which is what the Christian life is expand The whole book of Acts is working out the implications of the resurrection of Jesus, which is what the Christian life is all about. By itself, the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus is incomplete without the ascension. In this passage, there are two verses about the ascension, four verses about the coming of the Holy Spirit, and fourteen verses about choosing the apostles. When Jesus ascended into heaven, He gave the world two gifts. And with the ascension, all the goodness, blessing and greatness of Jesus becomes available to us. It means three main things...

Unlike the old covenant when only one prophet at expand The Holy Spirit came and we see the Spirit bearing fruit, a hundredfold. Unlike the old covenant when only one prophet at a time received the Holy Spirit, in the new covenant, all the waiting and praying followers of Christ received the Holy Spirit. And the result is simultaneous proclamation of the Gospel. There needs to be a sermon to explain the Spirit coming, and so Peter begins the first Christian sermon...

New ProphetThis passage contrasts the Jewish leaders' perception of Jesus and what they did as a response, against what God did expand This passage contrasts the Jewish leaders' perception of Jesus and what they did as a response, against what God did to fulfill His plan. The great reversal theme in Luke is further explained in terms of real salvation, real power, and real impact through Jesus who is sitting at the right hand of God. God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit take center stage, blessing the nations of the whole world according to God's promise to Abraham. Peter's faith which is through Jesus has given the lame man the new ability to instantly leap, walk and enter the temple to praise God. Like this man, we are all born incapable of changing our fallen condition. No one is exempt from having to repent. We all need the saving grace of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit to enter into a life of real praise.

New NameThe early church is characterized by bold proclamation, vivid demonstration of super natural power, dynamic growth, and expand The early church is characterized by bold proclamation, vivid demonstration of super natural power, dynamic growth, and constantly facing outright hostility. To be the people of Jesus is to be a people who suffers. And what does it look like for the church to face big opposition and suffering, and how do we gain confidence in Jesus? This passage shows us how see Jesus and how to pray big bold prayers so that we can have boldness to push the Gospel forward by speaking it.

They were expand We see a wonderful picture of the church as it is meant to be. The congregation was of one heart and one soul. They were persistently taught the Word of God, they intentionally visited each others' homes and enjoyed meals together, and they devoted themselves to prayer. As they were in fellowship, they loved each other and took care of the needy among them. In fact, this was so extensively done that there was not a needy person among them. God in the old covenant (Gen 12) promised to make Abram a great nation, in the new covenant, Jesus continue to be in the midst of His new people and worked powerfully to add to their numbers. Note, however, that He chose to punish the lies of Ananias and Sapphira...why?
