True Wealth

Feb 22, 2009

This passage warns against covetousness, which is a desire for more and more material things. Covetousness is the most common form of idolatry. It is a desire that overtakes our desire for God, replacing God with whatever we covet. In this passage Jesus exposes the folly of the rich man who is stressed about his wealth. Because all his wealth is taken away at his death he possesses no material things, and because he did not invest in the kingdom of God, he has nothing in heaven either. Anxiety is a red flag that indicates the area of our idolatry. David Short provides a clear picture of the kingdom of God (as described in Gen 12): 'The kingdom of God is God's people in God's place under God's rule, living in God's way'. When we belong to God, God has full authority over our possessions. And because our possessions come from God, we must give as God gives. When your material life is oriented around God and His kingdom, your heart will change...
