There are two shocks in this passage, a future shock (v22-30) and a present shock (v31-36). Jesus doesn't answer the question in v23, instead, He shifts the focus. The issue is you, He said, you must strive to enter the narrow door. The point of the passage is that many will miss out on what Christ has come to do. His warning is that there is a time to strive, and there is a time when it will be too late. The heavenly banquet is the one promised in Isaiah 25:6. Everyone who is outside the feast thinks they ought to be inside, and everyone who is inside knows that they deserve to be outside. As Jesus dies on the cross, Jesus opens the door for us. It is a narrow door and it is impossible to bring our idols with us. The second shock is the present shock, and it is Jesus who is shocked at our rejection...
