Who we are:

sj children > Sunday mornings

It is a joy to teach our children that the Lord has done everything that needed to be done to bring us into His family for eternity, our prayer being that they will know Him and enjoy Him forever.

Children from birth up to grade 6 meet in groups with other children their age and are led by their teachers in ways that capture their imaginations, engage their minds, and teach them to lean on the Lord in all things.

All children, from birth up to grade 6, begin with their families in church at either the 9:00 am or 11:00 am service (10:00 am summer), leaving for Sunday School after a short talk and prayer by one of our ministers.

We have a policy of “team teaching” in our Sunday School, meaning that children are always led by a team of two teachers. All volunteers receive input on Safety Guidelines for Childcare at St John’s as well as receiving ongoing training and support from our children’s ministry team.

Birth to Three Ministry

Babies (birth to 16 months) will be nurtured and loved in the nursery with toddlers being encouraged to play, sing and explore eternal truths. Parents will be given a pager should those caring for their children need to alert them to return. The nursery and toddlers’ room are next door to each other in the Lower Hall, on the south side of the building.

For children in the toddlers’ room, our teaching is based on “First Steps”, a curriculum from St. Matthias Media, which explores the concept of God as Creator in a context of play, story, singing and prayer.

Children from 3 years of age through to children in grade 6

All children, from birth up to grade 6, begin with their families in church at either the 9:00 am or 11:00 am service (10:00 am summer), leaving for Sunday School after a short talk and prayer by one of our ministers.

Children in grades 1 to 6 then come together for singing and prayer as well as updates from our missionaries, review, and an introduction to the morning’s lesson. They are then led into small groups with other children of their age. Pre-school aged children up to children in kindergarten meet in their respective groups in the Lower Hall.

Children in Grade 6

Please note that a class for grade 6 is offered only during the 11:00 am service. The leaders of this group will be the Bible study leaders for these children when they move into the youth group in the spring.
