St John's Vancouver Anglican Church is a community of Christians dedicated to the exposition and teaching of the Word of God, to the spreading of the good news of the Gospel at home and abroad, and to the application of God's purpose in our own lives and families.

So that you may know – a walk through 1 John

‘Little children.’ When was the last time you were called a child? For most of us, to be called a ‘child’ doesn’t seem like a compliment, yet John repeatedly calls his readers ‘children’ and even ends with the statement: “Little children keep yourselves from idols”. What was he saying? “Put down your toys and listen?” Yes, that is it, put down your toys and love the God who first loved you. Perhaps we could put down our toys and listen on Oct. 16 when Liveword presents three women opening up the book of 1 John to reveal to us what it is that he so earnestly wants us to know. As for being called ‘little children’, John goes on to write: “See how great a love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and we are.” We are not just anyone’s child, we are God’s. So what must we know?

About Liveword

Liveword Vancouver Women’s Conference is organized by a group of interdenominational Bible believing women. We aim to reach women of the Lower Mainland and beyond with biblical expository teaching, for the purpose of growing them to maturity in Christ. This vision arises from the conviction that the Bible, God’s living and authoritative word, transforms lives: indeed that ‘All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness’ (2 Timothy 3:16). In turn we are convinced of the benefit of expository teaching. An expository message relates expressly to the Scripture text in context and draws implications directly from it. By this method, and in the power of the Holy Spirit, the Word of God is handled carefully to reflect its purpose and authority.

Our hope is that women who come to the conference will be challenged to read the Bible in a way that encourages deep engagement with God's Word. At the conference, you will have an opportunity to meet with, and be encouraged by other Christian women who take God’s word seriously and seek to live in a way that honours Him.

Speakers:

Our speakers are three women who lead ordinary lives, yet share the desire to teach the Word of God to other women. This year, our speakers are Marion karasiuk, Tanya Hawke, and Lesley Bentley.

Marion Karasiuk
Marion is a former UBC engineer who lives in Toronto with husband Gary and two school age children. Marion’s passion for the Word of God led her to train as a Bible teacher and work as a lay preacher in a Toronto mission and at a nearby women’s prison. Marion has since been actively involved in a church planting project in central Toronto.

Tanya Hawke
Tanya Hawke is a wordsmith – she writes web sites and promotional materials for companies and organizations. When not at her keyboard, she’s probably playing tennis. Tanya and her husband Tim met and married at St. John’s, their spiritual home for almost 20 years. They live in Tsawwassen with their nine-year-old son.

Lesley Bentley
Lesley is a former CBC journalist who loves to teach the word of God. She and her husband Michael are active members of St. John’s, where Lesley serves as People’s Warden and leads Bible study. She is the mother of four sons, and enjoys running and knitting.
