Adorning the Gospel: Make-up that works

Adornv.t. Add beauty or luster to; furnish with ornament(s) [Concise OED]

The Apostle Paul writes: “in everything . . . adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour.” Paul is writing to Titus on Crete where the church is in a bit of a mess, finding itself surrounded by a culture marked by suspicion of ‘truth’, greed and addiction to luxury and comfort.

How can a church in an out-of-control society be brought into godly order?  How do we engage our society while honouring Christ our Saviour?  How can we show the world the beauty of the gospel of Christ in the most unlikely places? More specifically, how do we adorn the gospel living in the Lower Mainland in 2011?

Speakers

Jan Hobbis

Jan considers it a deep privilege to read and share the Bible with others. In addition to connecting people with home group Bible studies at St. John’s, she also writes Bible study guides that encourage groups to dive deep into God’s word, pray together and apply God’s word in their lives. Jan loves to read, play sports and travel. In fact, she leaves on a trip to Italy the day after the retreat!

Bronwyn Short

Bron loves teaching the Bible to women of all ages and stages. She continues to write resources aimed at helping Christians deepen in their faith. She admits she’s going through a “bird” stage and thinks Nuthatches are the perfect bird! She loves meeting new and old friends at the retreat, and she’s looking forward to teaching from the book of Titus – including the meaning of the word “Adorn.”
