Sunday School for birth to grade 6 is available during the 9:00 am and 11:00 am services and for age 3 to grade 5 during the 6:00 pm service. Your children attend the first part of the service with you; we have special service sheets designed just for them, so they can participate too! (Note: The birth to age 3 program is also available during the first part of the service, if you wish.) Part way through the service we pray for the children and they go to Sunday School. In the summer, Sunday School is offered at the 10:00 am service (birth to grade 5) and at the 6:00 pm service (age 3 to grade 5).
Your kids will love the music, storytelling, games, and crafts that help them learn about Jesus, the Bible, and the foundations of Christian faith. Just like the main services, topics follow a yearly cycle (Old Testament in the Fall, New Testament in the Winter, and catechesis in the Spring). Kids especially love that they can often choose from a variety of creative activities that reinforce what they’re learning, like playing a game, hands-on art activities, or acting out the story. Several times a year, we have art Sundays where we all work together on a big art project. These times serve as review, but are also some of the children's favourite Sundays!
Where do I bring my child on a Sunday morning? All children start with their families in the main service at either 9:00 am or 11:00 am. During the service the children will be asked to come to the front where there will be a short “Children's talk” and a prayer by one of our ministers. The children are then invited downstairs for Sunday School.
What can my child expect on a Sunday morning? Sunday mornings look different for each of the age groups. These are the age group divisions that exist at St. John's:
Birth to Three Ministry Babies (birth to 3 years of age) are nurtured and loved in the safe atmosphere of the St. John's nursery. All children are invited to participate in times of playing and singing, while the older children will spend time exploring God's word through story and play.
Children from Preschool through to children in grade 6
Children in preschool to Grade 6 are divided into Sunday School groups based on their grades. This is a time where your child will get to partake in a skit, try their hand at drawing and painting, play a game and find out what the Bible has to say about God and his desire for the world and their life. This is a great opportunity for children to meet other children in the church!

Where do I bring my child on a Sunday evening? All children start with their families in the main service. During the service, the children will be asked to come to the front and one of the ministers will pray for them. The children are then invited downstairs for Sunday School.
What can my child expect on a Sunday evening? Evening Service Kid's Church is offered for children aged 3 to grade 4. Children are invited to participate in a time of playing, singing, bible stories, arts and crafts led by our lovely team of volunteers.
Your Child's Safety First We take your child's safety very seriously. All of our volunteers are required to submit a background check as well as references. We have a policy of “team teaching” in our Sunday School, meaning that a team of two teachers always leads children. All volunteers receive training on Safety Guidelines for Childcare at St. John’s as well as receiving ongoing feedback and support from our children’s ministry team. One of our staff is trained in Emergency CPR and First Aid for children.
We also have a compiled a list of allergies and medical information about each child. If your child is new to St. John's Sunday School, we ask that you fill out a registration form so that we can have their updated contact and medical information. Dismissal Policy In order to ensure the safety of your child, our policy is that children grade 3 and under must be picked up by their parents in their Sunday School classroom after church is finished. Children grade 4-6 are released from Sunday School to go find their parents.
In the fall, we offer training on two nights for all of our new and returning Sunday School teachers. The time is designed especially for people teaching children in small groups in their churches, but would also be beneficial for parents teaching their children at home. In addition to training nights offered each year, volunteers are offered weekly support in meetings before class on Sunday mornings as well as being placed with someone experienced in teaching Sunday School. Our Children's Ministry team has many volunteer needs. We are always in need of special event volunteers, Sunday School teachers, and Snack Volunteers for Sunday School.
Sunday School Teachers Our requirements of teachers is that they love children, are committed to growing in Christ, and are a member of St. John’s. If you are interested in being equipped to join a teaching team on Sunday mornings, please contact the children's ministry staff.
Sunday School Snack Volunteers Every Sunday, we offer snack to the children in Sunday School. It is usually a simple fare of rice crackers, fruit, vegetables, and cheese. We rely on volunteers to provide and prepare this snack this week. If you are interested in helping out in this way, please contact the children's ministry staff.

Little Years is a weekly drop-in program for children between birth and five years and their caregivers. Each week there are different activities for children followed by a circle time. Caregivers can enjoy snacking on baked goods and coffee while connecting with other adults from their community. It runs from September to June. Check the calendar (under Connect) for times and location.
Kids@10 provides childcare for children ages 18 months up to preschool age during the W@10 bible study. The goal of the program is not simply childminding but to plant seeds of faith in the hearts of these young children. The program closely reflects our Sunday morning program with a circle time for singing, a Bible story, and prayer, followed by a snack and craft. Plenty of free time is also provided where the children can choose to play with a variety of toys or engage in activities such as coloring or play dough.
Good Friday Every year, the St. John's family gathers for worship on Good Friday. Upstairs, the parents worship and reflect on Jesus' death through Scripture, music, and teaching from God's word. Downstairs, the children also worship and reflect together through story, art, discussion, and song.
Bible Camp Every year, a four-day Bible Camp is offered for children who are going into Kindergarten through Grade 6. Bible Camp week is highly anticipated by all the children in our church family! The mornings are jam-packed with skits, songs, Bible teaching, games, crafts, and fellowship. The church rings with laughter as the children have fun engaging God's word together.
First Noel This Saturday event is a lovely and sweet introduction to Advent and the Christmas season for children up to 7 years old and is held every year in early December. Parents and children participate in art projects, songs, and storytelling, all of which are designed to kindle excitement and anticipation for Jesus' birth! Friends are more than welcome.
