Formed By Jesus
Jesus gathers with his disciples on the night before his crucifixion and prepares them for his death, their apostolic mission, and life in him. With a basin and towel, Jesus washes his disciples’ feet, then gives them a new command to love one another, promises his presence and peace, calls his disciples to abide in him, and prays them into the Father’s keeping. Chapters 13-17 in the Gospel of John, the Upper Room discourses, show how disciples are formed - cleansed, taught, kept, and sent - through the cross and in the power of the resurrection.
Across twelve bible studies, we trace this movement of grace: Jesus serves and commands (13), steadies troubled hearts and reveals the way to the Father (14), calls us to abide and bear lasting fruit (15), prepares us to face the world with the help of the Spirit of truth (15-16), and finally lifts His eyes in prayer for our glory, holiness, and unity (17). Every step shows not only what disciples are called to believe and do, but how Jesus himself makes and keeps us as his own, Join us in these 12 studies, as we slow down our reading, observe the text, set it in context, trace the gospel through it, and learn to obey Jesus with the help of the Holy Spirit. The Lord who knelt to wash his disciples’ feet now intercedes for his church. In these chapters, he forms us so that by abiding in him, we my know him and bear much fruit.
