In Ephesians, the Apostle Paul lifts our eyes to God’s sweeping, eternal purpose in Christ. Those who belong to Christ are blessed with every spiritual blessing: being made holy and blameless, adopted into God’s family, redeemed and forgiven through Jesus, and sealed with the Holy Spirit as the guarantee of their inheritance. This inheritance of every spiritual blessing in Christ belongs to God’s one new people, Jew and Gentile together in Christ. Together they are being formed into the Church – one new humanity through whom God makes his wisdom and grace known to both the visible and invisible world. At the heart of the letter is God’s good purpose to unite all things in Christ and to restore what sin has divided and disordered under his gracious lordship. As we study Ephesians, may the Holy Spirit renew our minds and enlighten the eyes of our hearts so that we may know the Lord more deeply and live more faithfully as his people.
